Initially, Rafferty’s new label, United Artists were set against releasing Baker Street as the album’s lead-off single. Rafferty had originally written it for guitar, but when that didn’t soar – and at producer Hugh Murphy’s prompting – he summoned an unheralded session player, Raphael Ravenscroft to the studio to put it down instead on sax. That much seeped into the optimistic last lines of the song: ‘And when you wake up, it’s a new morning/The sun is shining it’s a new morning/And you’re going, you’re going home.’ These were given wings by the album’s most distinctive melody line and which burst up throughout the song. Baker Street was one of the last songs he wrote for the record and just as his contractual dispute was being settled. Rafferty was also blessed to be able to sing them in a voice that had both McCartney’s sweeter registers and Lennon’s raw passion. A Beatles nut, he fixated on strong melodies and the ten featured songs had that much in abundance. Available via: Rab Noakes Website | Bandcamp and all good record shops. The title of the album he eventually cut was also derived from his protracted spell commuting – City To City. I’m Walkin’ Here is out now via Neon Records. With a wealth of songs, stories and experience to bring to his performance, Rab Noakes in concert is an event that every lover of acoustic music should make the most of. With accompaniment that includes snatches of Bye Bye Blackbird, Mindful confirms Rab as one of our greatest song writers and By The Day speaks for itself:īringing the night to a close with a return to I’m Walkin’ Here Slippin’ Away and Don’t Say Money Doesn’t Matter bring us full circle and back to one of the most enjoyable albums to reach the shelves this year. He doesn’t complain about it either and is keen to share the insights he’s gained as a result. In two new songs, Rab shares his thoughts on his recent serious illness which, refreshingly, he isn’t reticent about. There’s some new material to set the chronological balance, though. Pass The Time, Roll On Saturday and a menacing performance of Twa Corbies (inspired by his recent work with Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes) are all enthusiastically received, and he clearly relishes going back to these old favourites. The new material was warmly received, but most of this audience knows him well, and are looking forward to revisiting some of his back catalogue. There’s a palpable sense of anticipation just before Rab takes to the stage for his second set. It’s such a heart-felt, sincere song you wonder how Rab can sing it without becoming lost in the emotion but he steadies himself with typical humour as the song closes – “No more time? I’m gonna be on for hours yet” His ability to a adapt a musical theme, as well as a lyrical one, shines through when the sublime instrumental prelude, A Little Time Left is followed by his tribute to Gerry Rafferty No More Time. Much of Rab’s song writing is far more organic in nature, especially those he’s written in memory of departed friends. The result is always fascinating, never contrived. Rab doesn’t drag a song from a single line, he adopts a theme and crafts a series of colourful explorations. This, however, is what makes a song writer. Later, the equally punchy One Dog Barks prompted Rab to speculate that “dragging a song out of one good line is a risky business”. The upbeat Don’t Let It Out Of Your Sight, was followed by the more sedate It Happened All The Same and I’m Walkin’ Here – both of which pack a memorable lyrical punch and received a rousing reception. Opening with three choice options from I’m Walkin’ Here, Rab’s rich guitar tones strong, clear vocal and affable stage presence ensure a great start to the evening. Rab Noakes is a familiar face at this venue, Kinross is almost a home crowd, and it isn’t surprising to find every seat in the house occupied as Rab takes to the stage for the first of his two sets. In a sizeable back room at The Green Hotel in Kinross there’s an Aladdin’s Cave of rock and folk memorabilia where Mundell Music has, since 1999, presented intimate gigs for appreciative audiences. As well as the 21st Century Skiffle of his latest release, audiences can look forward to a generous sprinkling of old favourites and, as we learned in Kinross on Friday, one or two new songs. Rab takes to the road this month for a series of solo gigs around Scotland. I’m Walkin’ Here ( read the review) confirmed Rab’s status as one of the most important figures on the Scottish music scene, and after more than forty years in the business he looks set to continue providing first class songs and recordings. Last month on these pages we featured the release of a double CD from Fife singer/songwriter Rab Noakes.

You won’t need to worry about your summer body either, because these margarita popsicles have only 55 calories a piece. So you’ll need to consume four Freeze-A-Ritas if you want to get a full can’s worth. In fact, each icicle only weighs in at 2 ounces, which is roughly ¼ the size of the canned margaritas. However, in comparison with the canned Ritas, the ice pops are smaller. All these popsicles come loaded with 8% ABV, which matches the ABV on the existing line of canned Ritas. You’ll get six Lime-A-Ritas, which is the brand’s take on the classic margarita, and another six Straw-Ber-Ritas. And now, getting your buzz just got a whole lot cooler and easier because Ritas is now in popsicle form! Ritas now has popsicle versions of their canned Lime-A-Rita and Straw-Ber-Rita drinks RitasĬhill out this summer with these new Freeze-A-Rita Ice PopsĮach box of ice pops comes with a dozen margarita popsicles. Their ingenious canned margaritas are perfect for those moments when you really need a boozy pick-me-up but can’t be bothered to drive up to your nearest bar or fix up a drink yourself. They’re just a fun way to keep cool without losing your ‘adult card’, right? Ritas has been serving us ready-to-drink canned margaritas for a long time. And no alcoholic beverage is safe from this summer trend – not even vodka. This smooth margarita will certainly go down easy and come on strong at 12.5 alcohol by volume (ABV). It contains Cutwater Tequila, lime, pure cane sugar, and a hint of orange for a twist. It appears that cocktail popsicles are all the rage now. The Cutwater Lime Tequila Margarita is no ordinary canned cocktail. And we couldn’t be happier, because these ice pops combine two of summer’s most beloved coolers: popsicles and margaritas – what more could you ask for? But that doesn’t mean that we’ve got to miss out on boozy goodies like these fun and fruity Freeze-A-Rita Ice Pops! This new offering from the Bud Light brand was announced in April and finally hit the shelves this May. This year’s Cinco de Mayo fiesta may not have been as loco as the ones we’ve had before. You realize in a few moments you'll be on the other side of that door. It's when the correct altitude is reached and the door opens, that with a start, most people realize they've never been in a plane with an open door before! At this moment, there's a rush of clarity. Though there's a hint of nervous energy, the air is primarily saturated with expectation. For others, there is a jovial atmosphere with jokes being batted between you and your instructor or you and the pal you roped into jumping with you. For some these moments are filled with quiet contemplation. Incrementally you'll watch the airfield grow small beneath you as the plane ascends. With an effort that feels like a tug, the plane will lift from the ground. Plane RideĪside from getting you to the height you need to safely skydive, the plane ride is an experience all it's own. Although, these are valid portions of the day as well.Īt any rate, each of the aforementioned three sections (plane ride, freefall, and parachute descent) impart their own influence on the total feeling of the skydiving experience. Note that this truncated version does not include the jitters of walking up to check-in or the sometimes anxious anticipation that flits about your mind as you wait your turn to meet with your instructor to gear up. The nitty-gritty of a skydiving experience is roughly composed of three parts: a plane ride, freefall, and parachute descent. That's because trying to find the words to describe what it feels like to skydive is like trying to find a light switch in the dark when the room is actually the whole house, and there is only one switch (weird floorplan right?).īut the attempt to figure out what skydiving feels like makes perfect sense, before flinging yourself with reckless abandon to the mitts of the unknown, you want to know at least a little of what that unknown is going to be like. Dipping to one side versus another will cause the parachute to turn, while pulling down on both toggles simultaneously will cause the back to dip, catching more air, and braking the parachute.Ask someone who just landed from a skydive to describe what it felt like and they'll probably say indescribable. Pulling down on toggles changes the shape of the canopy and impacts how air rolls through it. They have two toggles that attach to brake lines, which provide the canopy pilot the ability to land on a target with precision. Most skydivers today use rectangular canopies that are more steerable than the round canopies of the past. Suddenly, you have more air pressure slowing your descent than you do force of gravity pulling you down. This is the result of a massive shift in air pressure. When the parachute first opens, your body may feel a jolt as it’s being dramatically slowed from terminal velocity. The important thing with parachutes, however, is that they have a large enough surface area that the fabric can capture enough air to slow down the speed of your body to a safe landing speed. The physics of the canopy depend on the size and shape of the parachute. If you wanted to fall at a slower rate, you’d widen your arms and legs and create as much surface area as possible as though you’re a parachute attempting the capture the wind. If you want to fall faster, you would reduce your surface area (think bringing in your arms and legs and scrunching into a ball). Pushing your legs straight back down on the friction will cause you to move forward. Pressing down on that friction with one arm, for example, will cause you turn. The friction that you feel in the air (which may begin to feel like an industrial-sized fan is blowing wind up at your belly from below you) is how skydivers control their movements. Most people fall at a rate of about 120 miles per hour once they hit terminal velocity. But eventually, the strength of the gravity force equals the strength of the air pressure and you will have reached terminal velocity. The two are working against each other, with each growing more powerful as you gain speed. The second is air friction, which can include the air pressure that’s pushing up against your body as you can speed. The first is gravity, which pulls you back down toward the ground. Once you exit the plane attached to one of our professional instructors, two forces immediately descend upon you. It’s important to have a basic understanding of these heading into your first skydive because educating yourself about what’s happening during your first flight at The Skydiving Company and why can help to improve your overall experience. At any given time during your one-minute freefall or five-minute canopy ride, a number of forces are simultaneously at play impacting how you fly. Skydiving is one great lesson in physics. There are two ways to perform joins: using the $lookup operator and denormalization. Let’s begin by discussing how we can join data in MongoDB. In this article, we’ll review strategies we can use to join data in MongoDB. Still, this doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to perform data joins - they just look slightly different than SQL databases. We’d do this with a left outer join of the Users and Products tables in a SQL database. We’d want to do this in a single query to simplify the code and reduce data transactions between the client and the database. We want to retrieve a list of all the users and show a list of the products they have each bought. Imagine we have two collections: a collection of users and a collection of products. Plus, most languages have native object-relational mapping, such as Mongoose in JavaScript and Mongoid in Ruby.Īdding relevant information from other collections to the returned data isn’t always fast or intuitive. When retrieving data from a collection of documents, we can search by field, apply filters and sort results in all the ways we’d expect. MongoDB provides the MongoDB Query Language for performing operations in the database. There’s no need to create a collection and prepare a schema before you add data to it. When you’re trying to create a document in a group that doesn’t exist yet, MongoDB creates it on the fly. Each document is part of a collection - think of a table if you’re coming from a relational paradigm. These fields can have a range of flexible types and can even have other documents as values. MongoDB stores each record as a document with fields. Developers can build applications more quickly because of this flexibility and also have multiple deployment options, from the cloud MongoDB Atlas offering through to the open-source Community Edition. It enables a more flexible approach to data modeling than traditional SQL databases. MongoDB is one of the most popular databases for modern applications. This moral is now known by such names as the "Thumperian principle", "Thumper's rule" or "Thumper's law". He remarks that Bambi is "kinda wobbly" but is reproved by his mother, who makes him repeat what his father had impressed upon him that morning, "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all". The character Thumper first appears in the film Bambi, watching as Bambi is first presented as the young prince to the creatures of the forest. The personality and visual appearance of the character was based upon Beatrix Potter's Benjamin Bunny. Thumper is Disney's adaptation of Friend Hare from Felix Salten's 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. As voiced by the young actor, four-year-old Peter Behn, the vivacious character of Thumper was expanded from its original minor role and led to a focus upon the young animals in the story. The character was an important influence upon the development of the movie Bambi which started production with an adult tone which seemed too serious and uncommercial. The young adult version of Thumper also appears at the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts as a meetable character in Fantasyland and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But sometimes explosions - thousands of explosions - are still enough to make me coo. Now that the mod is out of beta - although still in development - there's a little more game to JC2MP. These come via different modes, which can be activated and joined through in-game chat commands - /derby to take part in a destruction derby inside an enormous satellite dish, /race to speed around parts of Panau in competition. In all the servers I've joined, these events were frequent but poorly populated. If players do try these modes at all, they learn quickly not to return.ĭestruction derbies aren't much fun when it's just you and a few other cars, and certainly not in a world which is effectively one giant destruction derby already. Instead my time in JC2MP has been mostly spent making my own fun. Every server I've played on also comes with a kind of cheat mode enabled, where the game's normal 'buy menu' has had all the prices set to zero, and any vehicle can be purchased and spawned from anywhere. This has some interesting consequences.įor example, spawning causes you to appear hundreds of feet in the air. It turns out Just Cause 2's boat physics work in such a way that you can propel them through the air just by pushing the throttle down.Īs you skydive towards the surface, you can pop up the buy menu and spawn a plane or helicopter or boat in which to fly away. Songs like " Mammoth" were recorded using his Les Paul for this same reason.īanks used his Jaguar as his primary guitar for the end leg of the Our Love to Admire tour, and was also seen using a Gibson ES-135 for songs such as "Not Even Jail", but since the 2010 tour leg he has not been since using the Jaguar or ES-135 and has only been seen using his traditional black Les Paul in live settings. He then started using a Fender Jaguar (primarily due to the use of the tremolo in songs such as "Pioneer to the Falls") and a Gibson Flying V (which, for a time, had the word "breasts" spelled out in white tape on it) for songs from Our Love to Admire, and used his Les Paul for songs from Antics and Turn on the Bright Lights, although some songs like " Obstacle 1" were played with the Jaguar because of the impracticality of switching. The band also released their first single, "Bad Feeling." In the music video for the album's lead single " All the Rage Back Home", Banks can be seen playing a Fender Precision Bass.īanks claims to have multiple solo projects under various monikers. Banks has said that he does not try to emulate his greatest influences because he thinks he cannot live up to them, saying "I would never try to sing like Frank Black or Kurt Cobain because you just can't do it." īeginning with the recording Interpol's fifth album, El Pintor, Banks has assumed bass duties. īanks' voice, singing style, and lyrics have been strongly compared to, most notably, Ian Curtis of Joy Division. Banks was initially not inclined to join a band as he had been writing songs as a solo artist, but eventually joined Interpol as a guitarist and vocalist after listening to the type of music they were writing and playing. Kessler then asked Paul Banks to join the band he had started with drummer Greg Drudy and bass guitarist Carlos Dengler. In the summer of 1997, Banks ran into fellow NYU undergrad Daniel Kessler, whom he had met previously on a study abroad program in Paris. He was inspired to become a musician by Nirvana. He later took a data entry job at the Scholastic Corporation and worked in a café in order to devote more of his time to music and rehearsals. He later attended New York University, where he studied English and comparative literature, and he worked at magazines such as Gotham and Interview after graduating. As a result of his time in Mexico, he is fluent in Spanish and speaks the language with an accurate Mexican accent. Describing his childhood, Banks recalled: "We moved around like a military family, but we weren't a military family." īanks was involved in stage productions during his time at the American School Foundation, playing the lead role in the musical South Pacific. His father was later transferred to Mexico, where Banks finished high school at the American School Foundation in Mexico City. They subsequently moved to Spain when he was around 12, and it was here that he studied at the American School of Madrid in Pozuelo de Alarcón before the family moved back to the U.S. His family left England when Banks was three years old and moved to the United States, settling in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. His father worked in a corporate job for an automobile manufacturer, and his employment required that their family relocate frequently. Banks was born in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, on, to English parents.
